Anne Vaughan was born around 1534, the daughter of a successful and well-connected mercer. She was, by way of birth, then marriage, and then inheritance, among the wealthiest women of her time in England. Stephen Vaughan’s considerable business interests in Antwerp, as well as his relationship with Thomas Cromwell, chief architect of the Henrician Reformation and arguably the most powerful statesman of the sixteenth century, brought him into close proximity with early forms of Protestantism both in England and on the Continent. By the time he married his second wife, when Anne was still a young girl, he seems to have definitively aligned himself with Reform theology: she was a zealous Protestant whose faith likely had a significant influence on her stepdaughter.
