George Johnston edited
The Collected Poems of George Whalleyfollowing Whalley’s death in 1983. The book reprints all of the poems in the two books Whalley published in his lifetime,
Poems 1939-1944(1946) and
No Man An Island(1948). It also includes a selection of previously published and unpublished poems. Of the poems collected here for the first time the majority were written in the 1950s and the 1960s. In a review of the book, David Lewis calls Whalley “one of Canada’s most distinguished poets”, whose verse reveals a writer “of unique genius” (Lewis 1987, 730, 732).
The book is organized in three sections. In the first, Johnston reproduces No Man An Island with its three-part structure and its order of poems. The second section includes eight pieces from Poems 1939-1944.
