Huey Pierce Long’s turbulent life was relatively brief, cut short when he was assasinated at 42. His “fast track” political career had carried him from State Commissioner for Louisiana to United States Senator in just eight years, and at the time of his death, he was planning to run for the U.S. Presidency. Yet he never relinquished his connection with and affection for his native state of Louisiana and its governance. Despite his short tenure on earth and his largely regional affiliation, one would be hard pressed to find another U.S. historical figure who has had greater impact on American literature and politics than Huey Long, also known as “The Kingfish.”
