Robert Francis Kilvert, diarist, was born on 3 December 1840, the second of six children of the Reverend Robert Kilvert, a Wiltshire clergyman, and his wife Thermuthis Coleman. He was educated at home, and at his uncle’s school, Claverton Lodge, in Bath, before going up to Wadham College, Oxford, in 1858, where he read Law and Modern History. Kilvert retained a deep affection for Oxford in later years—he described “an indescribable thrill of pride and love and enthusiasm” on arriving in the city on one of his return visits—but his time there was undistinguished, and he graduated with a Fourth in 1862.
