Joel Fishman

Joel Fishman, B.A., M.A., M.L.S., Ph.D.

My M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English history are from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, I have a M.L.S. from Queens College (CUNY). I have been a law librarian since October 1973, the last 36 years at Allegheny County Law Library in Pittsburgh, PA. For the past 13 years, I have also been part of Duquesne University School of Law Center for Legal Information.

My teaching includes courses in History of Western Civilization, American History 1877 to present, American Legal History, English History to 1715, Introduction to Legal Research, Legal Research Methods, and Advanced Legal Research in various universities/colleges including Bronx Community College, University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne University.

My research today is chiefly in Pennsylvania legal history and bibliography and secondly in English history. My recent works include Index to the Journal of Supreme Court History Volumes 1-35 (1976-2010) (2012) and Index to the American Journal of Legal History Volumes 1-50 (1976-2010) (2011), Navigating Legal Research & Technology (2010), Judges of Allegheny County, Fifth Judicial District, Pennsylvania (1788-2008) (2008). The article written for the Literary Encyclopedia derives from my dissertation and other sources as listed in the reference notes. I hope to write some additional articles for the Encyclopedia on seventeenth-century legal writers.
