Mary Grover
I am an independent scholar. When I worked at Sheffield Hallam University I helped found the Middlebrow Research Network. I have written a chapter on Rumer Godden in the essay compilation on Godden edited by Phyllis Lasner. The Ordeal of Warwick Deeping: middlebrow authorship and cultural embarrassment (2002) and a volume of essays co-edited with Erica Brown, Middlebrow Matters (2012) are my two main publications. Since I retired from Shhield Hallam I have founded a community group called Reading Sheffield funded by local charities. We have collected and transcribed over 60 oral histories of reading memories from people who became passionate readers in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. We then won money to take artists into schools, museums and libraries to help children reimagine the books they love.
