In his memoir,
Good People(2001), Jon Hassler described himself as having “had the good fortune to be reared in a cocoon of goodness”. The American novelist was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1933, but before he was a year old, his family moved to the small town of Staples, Minnesota, where his father was a grocer, and then moved to another Minnesota small town, Plainview, when Hassler was in his early teens. Hassler graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. After college, Hassler became a high school English teacher and taught at public high schools in three different Minnesota towns while attending graduate school at the University of North Dakota and eventually earning his M.A. in English (1960).
