The Assembly of Notables met at the request of Louis XVI to consider the dire financial and political situation. They agreed to most of Calonne's proposals but demanded he show them a statement of state expenses to prove the deficit did not result from royal extravagance. Calonne was dismissed by Louis in April and when the Assembly demanded that a permanent commission be appointed to oversee royal expenditure, Louis dismissed the Assembly.
