On the 16th of August, 1777 the British were defeated at the Battle of Bennington. It was a decisive victory for the American troops, who were largely made of militiamen led by General John Stark (28th August, 1728 - 8th May, 1822). The victory boosted the colonists' morale and caused severe losses to the British forces.
