Charles I issued a charge of treason again one member of the House of Lords and five members of the House of Commons. Parliament refused to endorse his decision and Charles attempted to make the arrests by force, sending a troop of horsemen to Westminster. Parliament had been warned and Charles' action was unsuccessful, but it generated a great measure of popular support for Parliament and against the King and his perceived tolerance of Popery.
