Henry de Bourbon, the Huguenot King of Navarre, marries Margaret of Valois, sister of Charles IX of France. This marriage was intended to effect a reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics, but it singularly failed to do so, since the wedding was followed in Paris by a massacre of thousands of Huguenots, known as the St Bartholemew's Day Massacre.
