The English Parliament met, sitting until 14th March the following year. It passed a Chantries Act, which suppressed more than 2000 of these institutions. As well as being associated of Catholic doctrines of purgatory, however, they often provided crucial educational services through their priests, and this was lost as a result of the new law. John Hales also introduced a bill to reform abuses in the enclosure of common land in England, but this was quashed.
