The Schmalkaldic War shifts in Charles V's favour, as the cities of Augsburg and Strasbourg both submit to the imperial army. At the same time, however, the Council of Trent writes decrees on justification by faith that codify the Catholic position and end Charles V's chances of reconciliation with the German Protestant princes.
